In a show of force, to display follow-through on campaign promises to deport criminals, the Trump administration has rounded up nearly 300 Venezuelan men and shipped them to a prison in El Salvador.
The prison is a brutal place, known to engage in human rights violations.
The men were given no due process, many pulled off the street or out of their homes based on questionable evidence of gang affiliation and sometimes none at all.
At least one man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, has been admitted by the administration to have been sent due to an administrative error. A judge ordered them to bring him back. Despite the error, they refuse to return him to his wife and autistic child.
CBS reported that the majority of the men have no criminal record or even charges in the US or any other country.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem went to the prison for a photo opp in front of imprisoned men.
Trump has since threatened to send American citizens to this hell hole.
A republican congress woman said in a recent town hall that once you break the law, you don’t deserve due process. Criminals are exactly the people who need due process. Without it, how can we know they’re criminals?
We can’t.
There is no time limit for the “sentence” the Venezualan men are serving. They are simply gone.
